This release contains a standalone version of the artsd sound server. Running artsd will allow you to let multiple applications play and record sounds at once, network transparently. Please refer to the documentation for further details on what aRts can do. This release consists of two parts:
Contains the framework, libraries, soundserver, communication, command-line utilities and so on (everything you need to run artsd).

Contains additional effects, synthesis, artsbuilder runtime, midi, instruments ... - right now there is not too much KDE independant frontend code for this, though.

If you have KDE, aRts is already included, so keep using the version of aRts that comes with KDE. If you don't, use this.
